Dr. Steve Jones, PhD, is CEO of Great Blue Heron, LLC, and former CEO of Fairmont State University, Antioch University New England, Urbana University and University of Alaska Fairbanks and former board chair at the University of the Arctic.
Now 45 years beyond his degree in Forestry, Steve is devoting his life to championing the cause of Nature-Inspired Learning and Leading. He founded the Nature Based Leadership Institute at Antioch University New England in 2015 while serving as the institution’s president. Steve preceded his 34 years in higher education with a dozen years in the paper and allied-products manufacturing industry where, among other assignments, he conducted tree-nutrition and forest-fertilization research for four years and served another two years in the Corporate Office of Environmental Affairs. As Alabama region land manager from 1981-84, he oversaw operations on the company’s 500 square miles of forestland across 32 Alabama counties.
Steve has a doctorate in applied ecology. He and his wife of 46 years, Judy, live in the Tennessee Valley region of north Alabama. Steve and Judy have a daughter and son and five grandchildren. Steve volunteers as a teacher of courses relating to Nature-Inspired Learning and Leading at Huntsville’s LearningQUEST, the University of Alabama in Huntsville’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute and at THRIVE Senior Living in Huntsville.
